Christmas on a Train

Everybody’s got their memories

Of places they want to be

Now the Christmas season’s upon us once again

I always think about

One I could’a done without

The year that I spent Christmas on a train

It was 18 hours delayed

At the station I was dismayed

The sky was pouring snow to freezing rain

And it was midnight Christmas Eve

When we finally began to leave

The year that I spent Christmas on a train

The porter and me got drunk

From a bottle I had in my trunk

As we rolled along the forests and the plains

He says if you’re ever in Montreal

I got a daughter you could call

But this year you have to spend Christmas on this train

I played a lot of solitaire

Cause there wasn’t anybody there

Conductor tried to cheer me up but all in vain

And all that night & day

I had to pass the time away

The year that I spent Christmas on a train

I sang some Christmas songs

And the staff all sang along

There was a waitress liked me and she made it plain

But before I could even kiss her

Had to tell that I’d miss her

It was finally time to get off of that damn train

My brother picked me up late

The kids couldn’t stay up to wait

The house was dark when we drove up the lane

I’m never gonna do it again

Next time I’ll catch a plane

Cause I never want to spend Christmas on a train
